そもそもデニムって何？

定義としては厚手の丈夫な綿織物で、 一般には経糸に20番手（短繊維の太さの単位） より太い
インディゴ染めの糸 緯糸に白の晒し糸（漂白した着色前の糸） を使う綾織を指す。
 表に経糸の風合いが強く現れ 裏側に緯糸の色が出るため白っぽくなる。

デニムとは一般的に、縦糸にインディゴ糸 横糸に白糸を使用した織物を指す。

デニムの語源は どこからきてるの？

アメリカのイメージが強いデニムだが デニムの語源は実はフランスにある！
17世紀フランスのニーム地方では、 絹を中心に織物業が盛んに行われていた。 
やがて帆船などの生地としてインディゴに染め上げた 安価で丈夫なコットン生地が生産されるようになると、 18世紀には海外へと輸出されるようになる。 結果としてニーム地方は綾織物の生産地として有名に。 ニーム産の綾織物はserge de nimesと呼ばれた。

では、ジーンズって何？ その語源は？

定義としてはデニムなどの 厚手の生地を使用して作ったズボンのこと！

ジーン（jean）という織物で作られた服が語源。 このジーンはイタリアの港湾都市 「ジェノバ（Genova、英語ではGenoa）」
から来ている。 この都市の丈夫な綾織りの綿織物が 開拓時代の米国に渡って重宝されるようになった。 
デニムは生地を指しているのに対しジーンズはズボンを指す。 なお1567年に文献に初めてジーンズという言葉が登場する。

ニーム産とジェノバ産の 織物の違いは？

ニームで生産された織物は ジェノバ産織り（ジーン）を模倣したとも言われ、 この二つはよく似ている。 
ジェノバ産ジーンズは1567年 ニーム産デニムは1695年に 当時の文献にも初めて登場していることから
 ジェノバ産はニーム産よりも100年以上も前に誕生している！ ただ、ジーンは後染めで藍色1色のみであるため 
経糸と緯糸で異なる糸を使い分けるデニムとは 異なっていることがわかる。

当時のデニムとジーンズは染色するまでの工程が違う。
デニムは先染めした糸を織り上げる製法 ジーンズは織り上げた後に染める製法。

日本では『ジーンズとデニム』 2つの呼び名があるのはなぜ？

ジーンズは1960年代初頭から輸入され始めたが そこから80~90年代にはリーバイス501が爆発的ブームに！
 この過程では呼称はジーンズだったと言われている。 仁欺（じんす）という漢字があてられていたとも言われる。 
ジーンズは大衆化へと向かうが、 オシャレに気を遣う人々は同じ製品を ジーンズではなくデニムと呼ぶようになった。 
セーターをニットとズボンをパンツと 呼び始めた流れと同様の流れである。
